There's something about pedestrian only streets that I really enjoy.

I'm more relaxed and there seems to be a community and festive feel to the area.

There's such a street in Novi Sad, Serbia named Dunavska Street.  That it comes with wonderful architecture is a bonus.  We had an overcast day so no blue skies to complement the lovely colors of the buildings.

One doesn't need to be able to read the signs to find what one's looking for.

Why don't more U.S. towns have a pedestrian only area?

A local street that comes to mind is the lovely Santana Row in San Jose.  It's a relatively new area and could've been designed with the main street being all pedestrian since deliveries can be made in the delivery only area behind the retail row.  It would be perfect that way.  Instead you have to find the crosswalks and dodge traffic while shopping and smell car exhaust if you attempt to eat outside in this European inspired downtown.  It was an opportunity missed I think.

Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz would also make a wonderful pedestrian only street.  If not feasible during the day due to deliveries, how about starting at 5pm?
