Starry Starry Night

I love rummaging through flea markets and antique shops for fun pieces to upcycle or recycle into jewelry and other art pieces. Although for me it's not as much as a high as creating jewelry, it comes close. Actually the idea of finding use for something that no longer serves its original purpose can be really satisfying.

Who knew that pairing these wonderfully shaped lapis lazuli stones could be elevated even more by half of an antique buckle?! And two different types of antique buckles at that!

Earrings to Wear Alone or with Statement Necklaces

Banana Beach Earrings

While creating the series of statement necklaces inspired by Japanese fishing floats I started setting aside some lampwork and other interesting beads to use in earrings. My usual rule of thumb when wearing statement jewelry is to have one piece be the focal and if you wear other jewelry have them play supporting roles. In other words, if you wear a necklace that is telling a significant story wear earrings that don't steal the narrative and visa versa.

Depending on your style these earrings can stand alone too.

I learned a lot by creating in a series rather than one-offs. By focusing on one idea or element I was able to broaden my thought, deepen my meaning, and curate a collection.

In this next set of mixed media pendants and necklaces I expanded beyond talisman to story telling which is my favorite kind of art.

Broken Pieces

Sea Pottery, Vintage brass and copper, Swarovski crystal

In addition to sea glass one can find sea pottery shards along the beach especially if you're near an old dump. Pottery shards can be as decorative as the ironstone plate piece as seen in my mixed media piece above and blue and white pendant below, or of a more utilitarian use like a redware bowl piece or white stoneware.
