Creating Using a Piece of Someone Else's Art

Lampwork earrings

Spring into Summer Earrings

Many artists use art components from other artists and crafts people, but maybe none more than artisan jewelers.  My raw materials often include lapidary work from artisans in the form of cabochons and beads.  I also have a collection of lampwork beads that I've amassed over 20+ years.  Some I visit just to admire the artist's talent and vision.  Others find their time to inspire a pair of earrings, a bracelet, or a necklace.

Something Fishy Going on Around Here

Fishing lure pendant

Victorian Popper artisan pendant

Some husbands play golf while others build furniture or rebuild cars in their garage workshops.  Mine fishes.

Yukon fishing

Inconnu Lodge, Yukon 2001

Many of our vacations have either been solely for fishing or included fishing.  Except for one trip they were all incredibly beautiful places with wildlife on land and sea.  To find really good fishing you have to be willing to go remote and we've done that a few times with a few harrowing tales to go along with them.

My Pantone Spring 2020

Personal Totem Jewelry

Boho necklace

Heart Key Talisman Necklace

(Key by Gary Wilson)

I feel I create my most magical jewelry when in an extreme mood whether that is feeling joyful or troubled.  It's because I allow myself to be drawn in and focused on a story or idea.  The past few years have had a few more such moments than some others.

These three personal totem necklaces or what I like to call talismans were created in a couple of weeks this past summer when for my sanity I needed to spend more time in my studio and much less time online.

My First Pierced and Sawn Metalwork brooch

Copper brooch - pierced metal

While doing some cleaning of my studio I came across my first pierced and sawn piece from copper sheet.  I remember Dawn Nakanishi assigning the project in the beginning metalworks class at Cabrillo College in Aptos.  Every assignment would set my heart racing as I was out of my comfort zone of materials, fiber and seed beads, and hoped I'd be able to do as well as all the young students around me.  It was SO MUCH FUN!

Beaches Inspire Earrings

Boho earrings

St Tropez

SOLD

Why not?  One can be inspired by anything.  I have a fascination with beaches as they're different wherever your toes touch down.  It can be rocky or soft as powder.  It can be pink, white, tan, black or all the colors of the rainbow.  It can be just big ole rocks or tiny pebbles and shells.  I have a collection of many of the beaches I've traveled in my life and store them in glass bottles.  I wanted to share that with you, but they have not yet been unpacked.  Another post some day I guess.
